First Person Accounts of Newgate

Prison accounts give intimate and descriptive insight into the reality of the prison experience. Discussed here is a work titled Inside out; or, An Interior View of the New-York State Prison by former lawyer and ex-convict William Coffey. Coffey offers extensive and critical analysis of his experience at Newgate and examines the inefficiencies which marked the procedures of the penitentiary. This section will outline his observations of and thoughts on the structure,  labor system, and conditions at Newgate Prison.
