Religion and Chaplains

The idea of the penitentiary was built around the concept of penitence, the idea of criminals repenting for what they had done. This concept is heavily rooted in religion, and the role of chaplain’s in the penitentiaries was vital. The life and pursuits of John Stanford, a Newgate chaplain will be explored, along with the ways in which his influence continued to affect the prison and it’s religious values.
